Pre-Engineering

If you want a career in engineering, you may complete at least two years of college at Southeastern before enrolling in an engineering school. Many pre-engineering courses are basically the same for all types of engineering programs. It is recommended that you obtain a catalog from the engineering school of your choice before enrollment at Southeastern or during your first year of college.

The following courses are recommended and transferable to most engineering schools:

Subject AreaHours
English6 semester hours
Calculus10 semester hours
General Chemistry5 semester hours
Differential Equations3 semester hours
Physics8 semester hours
American History3 semester hours
American Government3 semester hours
Computer Programming3 semester hours
Social Sciences and Humanities10–12 semester hours

However, for some fields of engineering, you may be able to complete more courses or an entire undergraduate degree before enrolling in a graduate Master’s or PhD engineering program. For example, certain chemical engineering graduate programs will accept chemistry majors as long as they have taken sufficient additional math and physics courses. Laboratory research experience is strongly recommended.
