The Master of Science in Biology program provides an environment of academic excellence enabling students to be competitive in their chosen fields. Students master a body of knowledge, professional skills, and critical thinking to promote successful careers, responsible citizenship, and lifelong learning.
Program Admission Requirements
Candidates must be admissible to the School of Graduate Studies and must be approved by the Department of Biological Sciences. Applicants must submit a cover letter or letter of intent that includes: the degree option (thesis or non-thesis), the name of the selected advisor (if chosen), a brief description of research interests, and intended career pathway. Applicants must also provide a current curriculum vitae (CV) and request a committee of three faculty members willing to serve as the advisory committee.

Additional Courses — Choose One Option (24 hours)
Thesis Option: 18 hours of approved graduate coursework in Biological and/or Physical Sciences, plus thesis research constituting 6 hours of Research (BIOL, BOT, CHEM, SCIE, or ZOOL 5990).
Non-Thesis Option: 21 hours of approved graduate coursework in Biological Sciences and/or Physical Sciences, plus 3 hours of Special Studies (BIOL, BOT, CHEM, SCIE, or ZOOL 5970).
All graduate students are required to pass an oral examination administered by their graduate advisory committee (evaluated pass/fail). Students must also complete a short written examination covering the two required core graduate courses, used solely for internal assessment purposes.
